Epic Games has just revealed a brand-new cosmetic reward in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3. Unlike most pickaxes in the game, which appear in the Item Shop, the Axe of Unreal can only be unlocked by playing the game, making it one of the most exclusive cosmetics in the game.
The new reward arrives when Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 launches in early June. It also comes alongside Fortnite Power Rankings, a new skill rating system that tracks your performance across Competitive modes and Ranked playlists. While Power Rankings will give players a new way to measure their progress, the Axe of Unreal offers a cosmetic reward for reaching the highest rank in the game.
How to get the Axe of Unreal in Fortnite for free
Unlocking the Axe of Unreal is simple, although reaching the required rank is anything but easy. To get the pickaxe for free, you only need to reach Unreal rank in Fortnite Ranked after Chapter 7 Season 3 begins.
Epic has confirmed that the first time you reach Unreal rank, you will automatically receive the Axe of Unreal. The reward is completely free and does not require any purchase, Battle Pass ownership, or tournament placement. Instead, it is tied exclusively to your Ranked progression. Fortunately, this also means that you can work on it throughout the entire season.
The new pickaxe is designed as a long-term reward for dedicated players. Once you unlock the Axe of Unreal, you won’t be finished with it. Epic is introducing a progressive system that allows you to upgrade the cosmetic by reaching Unreal rank again in future seasons.

Each season that you reach Unreal will unlock a new tier for the pickaxe. This means the Axe of Unreal will gradually evolve over time, giving competitive players a way to show off how many seasons they have dominated. Players who consistently perform at the top level will be able to build a much rarer version of the cosmetic than those who only reach Unreal once.
Another important detail is that Battle Royale and Reload have separate versions of the reward. If you want to collect everything, you will need to climb to Unreal in both modes. The grind begins on June 5 when Chapter 7 Season 3 launches. The introduction of Fortnite Power Rankings should also make the climb more meaningful. The new system will use your tournament results and seasonal performance to generate a rating that updates every week.
If you haven’t completed the current Battle Pass, it may also be a good time to check out the best Fortnite XP maps. On top of this, you can unlock several free skins in Fortnite ahead of the launch of Season 3.
