Mahjong

Find a pair. Open up the puzzle.

A table full of tiles, a pair waiting to be found, and a clear board to work toward. Mahjong brings classic tile-matching solitaire to life as you search the layout for matching pairs and take them away.

What Is Mahjong Solitaire?

Mahjong Solitaire is the most popular single-player digital version of Mahjong. Sometimes also known as Mahjong Titans, Shanghai Mahjong, or Taipei Solitaire, it uses traditional Mahjong tiles but follows very different rules from the classic multiplayer game.

Instead of building a hand against other players, your goal is simple: clear the board by finding and removing matching pairs of open tiles. If you want to learn how the traditional game works, read our complete guide to setting up and playing Mahjong.

How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

Learning how to play Mahjong Solitaire is straightforward, but clearing more difficult boards requires careful planning. Here are the basic rules:

  1. Match open tiles: You can only select tiles that are free. A free tile cannot have another tile covering it and must have at least one of its left or right sides open.
  2. Match identical tiles: Select two matching tiles to remove them from the board. Some Mahjong variations treat Flower and Season tiles differently, allowing tiles from the same category to be paired even when their designs are not identical.
  3. Clear the board: Continue finding and removing matching pairs until every tile has been cleared or there are no valid moves remaining.
  4. Plan ahead: Avoid simply choosing the first available pair. Look for moves that uncover new tiles, free blocked sections of the board or create more options for your next move.

The basic rules are easy to learn, but choosing the right pair can make the difference between clearing the board and reaching a dead end. For more advanced advice, see our guide to the best Mahjong Solitaire strategies, tips and tricks.

Mahjong Solitaire Strategy

A strong Mahjong Solitaire strategy is based on keeping as many future moves available as possible. When several matching pairs are open, consider which move will uncover the most tiles or release an important blocked section of the board.

Tiles at the top of stacks and around the outer edges are often particularly valuable because removing them can expose several new options. It is also worth checking partially covered tiles before making a move so you can plan which matches you may need later.

Mahjong FAQ

Is Mahjong Solitaire the same as traditional Mahjong?
No. Traditional Mahjong is usually a multiplayer game in which players draw and discard tiles to build a winning hand. Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player matching puzzle where you remove pairs of exposed tiles from a stacked board.
What is a free tile in Mahjong Solitaire?
A free or open tile is one that is not covered by another tile and has at least one open side on either the left or right. Tiles blocked on both sides cannot be selected until neighbouring tiles have been removed.
How do you win Mahjong Solitaire?
You win by removing every tile from the board in matching pairs. The challenge is choosing your matches carefully so that you continue uncovering playable tiles rather than blocking pairs you will need later.
What should I do if I get stuck?
Look again at the available pairs and consider which moves will expose the largest number of new tiles. Planning several moves ahead can help prevent dead ends.
