About Solitaire

Solitaire, also known as Klondike, is the classic single-player card game that has entertained millions for generations. Whether you're taking a quick break or settling in for a relaxing session, Solitaire offers the perfect blend of strategy and satisfaction.

The goal is straightforward: build four foundation piles, one for each suit, in ascending order from Ace to King. Along the way, you'll arrange cards in the tableau, uncover hidden cards, and draw from the stock pile to find the moves you need.

How to Play

Solitaire is played with a standard 52-card deck. The game begins with seven columns of cards in the tableau, with the top card of each column face-up. Here's how to play:

  • Build the foundations: Move Aces to the foundation piles, then build up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Arrange the tableau: Stack cards in descending order, alternating between red and black suits.
  • Move sequences: You can move a sequence of properly ordered cards together as a group.
  • Fill empty columns: Only Kings (or sequences starting with a King) can be placed in empty tableau columns.
  • Use the stock pile: Draw cards from the stock when you need more options.

Tips for Winning

  • Expose hidden cards: Prioritize moves that reveal face-down cards in the tableau.
  • Don't rush to the foundation: Sometimes keeping cards in the tableau gives you more flexibility.
  • Empty columns are valuable: Create empty columns strategically to maneuver Kings and reorganize sequences.
  • Think ahead: Before moving a card, consider how it affects your other options.
  • Manage the stock pile: Pay attention to the order of cards in the stock and plan your draws accordingly.

The History of Solitaire

Solitaire card games originated in northern Europe in the late 18th century, with the first written records appearing in the 1780s. The game was initially called "Patience" in England and much of Europe, a name that perfectly captures the thoughtful, methodical nature of the game.

Klondike, the variant most people know simply as "Solitaire," gained worldwide popularity after being included with Microsoft Windows in 1990. Originally added to help users learn to drag and drop with a mouse, it became one of the most-played computer games in history and introduced card games to a whole new generation of players.
