Battlefield 6 lead argues RedSec’s 30Hz performance “beats most of the competition” amidst complaints, and he’s completely right

Following the gangbuster launch of Battlefield 6 earlier this month, EA has quickly released its new standalone, free-to-play battle royale mode: Battlefield RedSec.

Launching to Mostly Negative reviews on Steam, the release of the new Battle Royale mode has not gone down well with the core audience. As the base BF6 experience now shows RedSec challenges within its UI, fans are not happy.

Additionally, RedSec has problems of its own. The Battle Royale mode completely lacks the option for solo teams and autofills matches, and many have taken issue with the game’s netcode resulting in missed shots, as well as the annoying Bloom issue that also plagues the core multiplayer game.

In the hours since release, many fans have questioned how well RedSec runs, not just in the average framerate on the user’s end, but how fast the game’s Tick Rate updates behind-the-scenes. While you may be playing Battlefield RedSec at 144Hz every second, the game only updates at 30Hz, or 30 frames-per-second for each character.

One player on Twitter commented: “30Hz server in a battle royale in 2025 is definitely a decision”, but Battlefield lead producer David Sirland explains that 30Hz throughout the majority of the match is actually much faster than other battle royale games on the market.

“Its 60hz for the final fight. If you make it there. Also, Id argue our 30 beats most of the competition baselines too,” Sirland responded on Twitter, later explaining that 30Hz is just the “starting point” as the game launches into free-to-play.

Fans were quick to point out that Battlefield 4 servers in the server browser would update faster than 30Hz. However, those servers weren’t running the same level of simulation across the same number of players that Battlefield RedSec tracks at all time.

“They were not running 100 players,” the producer told fans on social media. “All that work makes 30 stable and 60 possible end game. There’s more to do, but compare apples to apples.”

Sirland’s claim that Battlefield RedSec performs faster than the majority of other battle royale modes is correct. Infamously, Call of Duty: Warzone—one of the biggest battle royale games on the market—runs at a rate of 20-24Hz depending on load for each player, and it never goes higher than this during the course of a match.

Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends—also published by EA—runs at a consistent 20Hz for all players with a lower player count of just 60 players per match. Additionally, Fortnite, by far the biggest battle royale around, runs at 30Hz for the entire match, and doesn’t increase in responsiveness as players drop from the game.

There are some outliers, though. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the pioneer of the current form of battle royale games, famously increased its server tick rate to 60Hz back in 2018, although in reality it often shifts between 50Hz and 60Hz dynamically. However, some popular multiplayer games that aren’t even battle royale titles have almost laughably low tick rates such as Splatoon 3’s 15Hz tick rate across all modes.

That’s not to say that Battlefield RedSec doesn’t have issues. However, the battle royale game’s tick rate definitely isn’t one of them. Compared to most BRs, the game is exceeding expectations, and the game even clears most non-BR multiplayer games’ performance as well.
