Behaviour Interactive’s extremely popular asymmetrical multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight is getting the Hollywood treatment. In development at Blumhouse, the studio behind the Five Nights at Freddy’s movies, the upcoming film adaptation is currently in the writing stages of production.

The Dead by Daylight movie is under The Conjuring 2 writer David Leslie Johnston-McGoldrick and The Hills Have Eyes writer Alexandre Aja. Right now, no director has been grabbed for the project, but the movie is being produced by James Wan, Jason Blum, and Stephen Mulrooney.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum described the upcoming film as a psychological horror movie. While no real details have been released, the film adaptation is being heralded as a true horror film unlike whatever Five Nights at Freddy’s was.

“What David and Alexandre bring to Dead by Daylight is a rare balance of character driven storytelling and relentless genre intensity,” Blum said. “Drawing from survival horror and psychological terror, their work establishes a world where fear is not just experienced, but earned. It is a cinematic blueprint designed to attract a director who can elevate that vision through performance and scale.”

“Alexandre and David are two modern masters of horror, and their script celebrates a dark distinction, Dead by Daylight is a game, its world is a nightmare,” added Dead by Daylight CPO Stephen Mulrooney. “We look forward to working with a director who appreciates the depth of their story, and cannot wait to see their visceral vision brought to life.”

The Dead by Daylight movie will focus on a team of survivors attempting to evade The Entity, the same premise as multiplayer matches in the survival horror game. However, the full premise of the movie has not been confirmed, and it’s not known what killers and survivors will be chosen for the story.

At the time of publication, no release date has been announced for the Dead by Daylight film adaptation. However, considering the rapid turnaround of most Blumhouse productions, it likely isn’t that far away.
