NetherRealm Studios and Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has confirmed the developer’s plan to continue making additional entries in the popular fighting game series.
Currently in development on a secret, unannounced project that many believe to be Injustice 3, NetherRealm has officially wrapped up work on post-launch support for Mortal Kombat 1.
While NetherRealm is seemingly not working on an MK title right now, Boon confirmed in an interview with Collider that the series is not dead right now. Supporting the release of the game’s latest movie adaptation, Mortal Kombat II, Boon revealed that the studio will revisit the game series in the future.
“I wish I could tease something. I think if I teased and gave it away, I would probably get in trouble,” the developer said.
“But we’re definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we’re definitely doing more, as well, so there are a lot of pots on the stove – not just with games, though, with other forms of media and whatnot,” he continued. “So we’ve got a lot of great announcements that are coming.”
Mortal Kombat 1 has been deemed a decent success by NetherRealm and publisher Warner Bros. However, as a major timeline reset and soft reboot of the series, the game did not perform as well as prior entries in the fighting game franchise.
As NetherRealm reportedly works on a brand-new Injustice title, it seems that there will be a significant wait for a brand-new MK game. Nevertheless, the iconic, visceral fighting game series is not on ice, and will be continued at some point.
As for the franchise’s movie series, a third film is already in development at New Line Cinema. While it may be a while until the game franchise continues, the movie franchise is expected to reach trilogy status. For context, the original film franchise ended after its second film.
