The upcoming impossibly-thin GamerCard handheld is releasing soon, and the adorable gift-card-sized games machine is just coming out of its shell.
Created by Grant Sinclair, the new Raspberry Pi gaming machine has rarely been seen actually playing games. However, the team behind the project have finally shown off some brilliant gameplay footage that shows just how neat this soon-to-be-released product looks in action.
When we talked to Grant Sinclair earlier this year for a deep dive interview on the creation of the new handheld, the device had rarely been seen in action. As one of the first to actually see how well the handheld actually worked and handled, we were instantly sold, but now it’s time for the world to see.
In a series of videos released on Grant Sinclair’s personal YouTube channel, new footage of the GamerCard actually playing games can be seen. Alongside an unboxing video, the new handheld can be seen running a variety of built-in games—such as the ZX Spectrum game Saboteur—alongside an unboxing video.
One video shows off a number of built-in games that will be available as soon as you turn on your GamerCard: Bloo Kid 2 and Astro Blaze. However, the beauty of the device is more about its potential with the device capable of playing thousands of PICO-8 titles and, obviously, the power to emulate a large range of retro consoles.
To this day, there’s still the same issue with the GamerCard: it isn’t being shown off properly. In an industry with a lot of handhelds, the GamerCard is unique in its form factor, and it’s capable of a lot more than its been shown off doing.
In my talk with Grant Sinclair earlier this year, we discussed how some would use it for making MIDI music, how it can read ebooks, how it can play countless retro games. If the team behind the project are indeed listening, hopefully we can see even more of the device in action before it’s properly released.
