Turtle WoW, an extremely popular private World of Warcraft appears to be facing a shutdown after losing a recent legal battle with Blizzard.
The private server was hit by a copyright infringement lawsuit back in August 2025 with Blizzard claiming that Turtle WoW’s “unauthorised servers harm the player experience in several ways”. While the private server pushed back with an open letter response to the developer to “embrace fan-driven content”, the studio took the fan server to court.
Now, an official ruling by the District Court of California has ruled in favour of Blizzard, agreeing that the private WoW server was in violation of the MMO’s copyright. The lawsuit commands the private server to “immediately and permanently cease and desist” development, marketing, distribution, etc, of all modded and remastered game clients “including but not limited to Turtle WoW”.
The specific mention of a “remastered” game client is an important aspect of the lawsuit. Prior to the private server’s initial legal challenge by Blizzard, Turtle WoW developers announced a project to release a remastered game client created in Unreal Engine 5 alongside a fan-made expansion story for WoW Vanilla that expanded on the original game’s lore.
Alongside the cease and desist, the developers behind Turtle WoW are also forbidden from sharing any client software, source code, promotional materials and social media accounts to others “for the purpose of enabling or facilitating the creation or promotion” of a successor, aka another private server or modding project.
Following the ruling on the case, Blizzard and defendants behind Turtle WoW reached an undisclosed settlement which “is expected to result in a resolution of the action in its entirety”. As the settlement is private, this could mean that the server may be able to continue in a different form, but the details are currently unknown. Currently, Turtle WoW is still live, although fans can no longer make donations to the project. However, future patches and support seems unlikely following the ruling in Blizzard’s favour.
Blizzard’s actions against the private WoW server come amid a very tumultuous time for live-service games. As server-dependent titles shut down constantly, gamers are pushing to be able to take the lives of the games they love into their own hands with initiatives like Stop Killing Games. While a different story for private servers of ongoing, still-supported titles, fan servers for MMOs have been a long-present part of the genre.
