Bungie’s Marathon is one of the best games of the year, but its sales have not been fantastic. Nevertheless, Bungie has reiterated its plan to continue with the game for a long time with years of updates planned for the multiplayer game.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, creative director Julia Nardin confirmed that the studio has “a few years” of plans for Marathon updates. However, as the game reacts to the community’s wants and desires, nothing is “locked in” right now.
“We know where we want to take the story over the next few years, but I don’t want to say it’s completely ‘locked in’ because it’s important to us that our players be able to help shape it,” Nardin told the outlet.
Unlike Bungie’s work with Destiny 2, the plan for Marathon will ensure that players aren’t left behind if they jump in late. While Destiny suffered from a poor onboarding experience due to vaulting and other issues, Marathon is being designed to make sure anyone can join whenever without missing anything.
“It’s also important that players can jump into Marathon at any time,” Nardin told the outlet. “They’ll always be able to uncover the mysteries of Tau Ceti’s past while experiencing its present.”
While the update structure for Marathon has been kept largely secret, Nardin says Bungie wants “every season to be a new entry point”. While each season will push the story forward the goal is for “new players to be able to understand what’s going on regardless of how long we’ve all been running.”
Bungie has already made a number of major changes to Marathon since launch. Alongside the introduction of the game’s weekend-only Cryo Archive, Bungie has also added new merciful options to the game and more.
The game’s first seasonal update, Nightfall, is set to launch in June. Alongside a nighttime version of Dire Marsh, the update will add a new Runner shell, new guns, enemies, mods, and the secretive Cradle system. The game’s second seasonal update launches in August.
