A GTA V Nintendo Switch port has been unceremoniously shut down after an expected legal notice from Take-Two.
A full port of Grand Theft Auto V to the original Nintendo Switch was a dream for many throughout the handheld’s entire generation. Unfortunately, despite the fact that the game can absolutely run on the handheld, no port ever happened.
Enter Paralympics Productions, a fan group that announced a full port of the open-world crime drama game to Nintendo’s handheld. Of course, the port could only be played by those who modded their system, but it was an option for those who wanted to play the game on the go.
While the fan port was announced back in August, Rockstar recently updated its modding guidelines to specifically state that fans cannot port games without permission. “Do not modify out games to operate on consoles, hardware devices, or other platforms where they have not been officially released by Rockstar Games,’ the guidelines read.
Shortly afterwards, Paralympics Productions confirmed that Take-Two had contacted them to shut down the project, although they hint that the team wasn’t immediately served legal notices. “I am thankful for Take-Two’s mercy so this is the definitive end,” project lead Mojso told fans.
“Paralympics Productions is shutting down on October 3rd,” they said. “Thank you everyone who supported us through tough times and lengthy development. I am sorry for not fulfilling your expectations and leaving you high and dry.”
With that said, Mojso did confirm that the port was almost ready for release, adding that it was “gonna release in the coming days”. While the lead wishes “Take-Two gave me more time”, they also explained that they “wouldn’t win in court” if Rockstar took proper action.
Alongside the fact that the fan-made GTA V Nintendo Switch port will not be releasing, Mojso is also leaving the homebrew development scene completely. After the project’s shutdown, which has come after months of work, the project lead told fans he’s “not releasing anything new and I’m not coming back”.
Fans originally got GTA V running on Nintendo Switch back in 2024, but the game did not run well on the handheld at all. Paralympics Productions’ port, on the other hand, reportedly ran well, hitting at least 30fps in most major scenes, which would’ve been a dream come true for many fans.
It’s worth noting that Paralympics Productions’ port of the game was based on leaked source code of GTA V. With that in mind, it’s unlikely that this version of the game would’ve ever been allowed to be released, although some have gained access to the port, and files may have been shared online.
Since the game can run on Nintendo Switch, there is hope that Rockstar will eventually port the open-world game to the handheld. Although, considering the fact that the handheld is already replaced with the shiny, more-powerful Nintendo Switch 2, it does seem unlikely. Could a GTA V port come to that handheld instead? Well, it could, but will it?
