Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 only exists because of BioWare’s incredible original duology. Originally released back in 1998, the original Baldur’s Gate was a gorgeous high-fantasy adventure made in BioWare’s legendary Infinity Engine.

Today, both the original game and its sequel are playable on modern machines via their snazzy Enhanced Edition re-releases. But what if we could play through those games with the new rules and gameplay options available within Baldur’s Gate 3?

Thanks to Baldur’s Gate 3 modder 786r786, we now have some inkling of what that experience would be like. Earlier this month, the talented fan released a stunning recreation of the original game’s prologue and first area via the Return to Candlekeep custom mini-campaign.

Available to download right here, the mod includes a custom main menu, a new character creation screen and even a new camp to hang out in. More importantly, it recreates the opening two hours of BioWare’s legendary CRPG in exquisite detail.

While Baldur’s Gate 3’s official mod tools don’t support custom campaigns, modders have found ways to make entire stories for PC players. Unfortunately, these campaigns are playable on console at the time of writing.

Modder 786r786 hasn’t confirmed whether the Return to Candlekeep campaign will be expanded to include more of BioWare’s classic in the future. Although, we really hope it will be.

Other Baldur’s Gate 3 custom campaigns include the in-development Path to Menzoberranzan, a huge project with dozens of developers working on it. Still in deep development, the mod’s first playable demo will hopefully release later this year.
