Baldur’s Gate 4 is ‘of course’ going to happen, but next D&D game won’t be successor to Larian’s ‘incredible’ title, says WotC

Wizards of the Coast has confirmed a new Baldur’s Gate will arrive at some point, but the next Dungeons and Dragons title they’re working on is something completely different.

Speaking to The Game Business, Wizards president John Hight praised Larian’s ‘incredible’ work in bringing D&D to arguably a wider audience than ever before. For their next entry into the universe, WotC has teamed up with Giant Skull, led by veteran developer Stig Asmussen, but made clear the team won’t be working on a successor to Larian’s game, but a completely new title altogether.

“Baldur’s Gate is an incredible game,” Hight said. “And of course, we’re going to do a successor. This is not the successor to that game. We go to Stig and his team to tell an incredible story and bring D&D to a very broad audience.”

Following in Larian’s footsteps, the new entry will aim to appeal to both hardcore D&D fans and more casual players ‘who love playing action games’. Asmussen is certainly in familiar territory, having served as game director on Respawn’s Star Wars: Jedi games and as creative director on God of War 3.

“The decision to go with D&D wasn’t very difficult, because it plays into the wheelhouse of the things we’ve done in the past, like God of War, and the Jedi Series,” said Asmussen. “We wanted to sink our teeth into something that’s legendary, that’s mythical, that has a lot of space for us to spread our wings, jump into a world and capture the spirit of it.”

Ideally, the game will appeal to D&D players because it will help them realise their imagination,” added Hight. “But it’s also going to hopefully appeal to people that love playing action games, that love the Jedi games, that love God of War games.”

So, what’s next for Larian? Speaking to Gamespot earlier in the year, the studio’s boss, Swen Vincke, revealed they are ‘deep in the trenches’ of working on their next ‘big thing’, and that it’s ‘shaping up quite well’. “It’s crazy ambitious,” he told the outlet.

“There’s so much new things we can do these days and so it’s complex, and on top of that, we’re trying to figure out how we’re going to be making two games, so organizing ourselves for that is also not the easiest thing in the universe.”
