Despite debuting as one of the first games announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, Borderlands 4 is missing on the new Nintendo handheld. While there is no release date for the port right now, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick claims that the port is still “doable”.
Built as an open-world game on Unreal Engine 5, Borderlands 4 has been at the centre of multiple controversies surrounding performance. Recently, the game saw some huge performance gains on all platforms, which should in turn help the seemingly still in-development Switch 2 port.
Speaking to Game File, Zelnick stated that the issue with Borderlands 4 on the handheld is not the fault of Nintendo’s hardware. “It’s doable,” the CEO said. However, they explained that the long-awaited port won’t come out until the game is in a good place on all other platforms.
“We’ve been addressing those challenges, and we want to make sure that we’ve fully addressed Borderlands 4 from a consumer’s point of view before we bring it to more platforms,” they told the outlet.
`While Borderlands’ presence on the platform has been troublesome, Zelnick confirmed that they will be supporting Switch 2 with more titles. However, the CEO explained that the handheld is still not the primary target for their games with their studios targeting Xbox and PlayStation instead.
“We want to be where the consumer is,” he said. “And we’ve supported Switch 2. You can tell from what we are doing and what not doing that our primary console platforms remain Sony and Microsoft”. While not confirmed, this likely hints that some major releases, such as GTA 6, might skip the handheld altogether.
As one of the earliest reveals for the Nintendo Switch 2, there’s hope that Borderlands 4, at least, will find a way to release on the handheld in a strong form.
In a previous Nintendo Creator’s Voice video, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford claimed “it’s pretty astonishing how perfect [the system] is for Borderlands 4” prior to its indefinite delay.
Borderlands 4 has seen the release of its first major DLC on other platforms. However, unfortunately, there’s still no release period for its Switch 2 version.
