Cyberpunk 2 is currently in development at CD Projekt Red Boston, likely continuing the first-person only view of the previous game. While fans are currently awaiting the next game in the series, some are still caught on the cancellation of additional DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077.
Following the release of 2077’s only expansion, Phantom Liberty, CD Project Red scrapped the game’s additional planned expansions. One of these expansions, only known as MOON, would’ve taken players to the colonised satellite which was cut from the base game.
Via TwistedVoxel, leakers revealed images of the scrapped MOON expansion back in 2024 as CD Projekt Red to start development on Project Orion which we now know is the full-fledged sequel Cyberpunk 2. CDPR also scrapped an in-development multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077 which appears to be part of the development plans for the sequel.
In a conversation on BlueSky, Cyberpunk 2 creative director Igor Sarzynski discussed the binned DLC with a fan who asked if the director felt the DLC would’ve been better than Phantom Liberty.
“Will the next season of your favourite series be better or worse than the current one?” the creative director responded. “In other words, who knows, it depends on so many things.” Essentially, the director explained that no one truly knows how good the DLC would’ve been in comparison as it was never finished.
Sarzynski also explained that CDPR and the Cyberpunk team “try to never tread the same path twice”, teasing that the cancelled expansion would have been a largely different experience to what players experienced in Phantom Liberty. While Phantom Liberty was a story about espionage and political intrigue, the MOON expansion would’ve been completely different.
While the second expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 was scrapped, CDPR did do well to improve the overall Cyberpunk experience instead. With the team moving from its internal RED Engine to Unreal Engine 5, it may be a long time until we get to experience the next game in the series, but it should hopefully be another fantastic game in the series.
While we wait for the company’s Boston team’s Cyberpunk 2, CD Projekt Red’s main studio is currently working on The Witcher 4. Expected to release in the next few years, this upcoming RPG will put players in the role of Ciri for a brand-new story that may only slightly feature the original trilogy’s protagonist, Geralt of Rivia.
