Cyberpunk 2077’s new console mod support reportedly skips Nintendo Switch 2, despite The Witcher 3’s mod support

While CD Projekt Red announced that it was done with Cyberpunk 2077 updates earlier this year, the studio is back with a major 2.5 update.

Alongside new quests and features such as FoV support, the update’s big ticket item this time around is mod support on consoles. Using Mod.IO, the same platform as Baldur’s Gate 3 and CDPR’s own The Witcher 3: Remastered, players will be able to download mods on Xbox and PlayStation.

However, mod support is seemingly going to be absent on Nintendo Switch 2, at least according to a now-deleted YouTube video based on early access to the game’s 2.5 update. Cyberpunk-focused YouTuber Was Nemo revealed that the game’s mod support is skipping Nintendo Switch 2 prior to removing the video for breaching embargo.

This is a surprise considering the fact that CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3: Remastered included official mod support on Nintendo Switch 2 just last month. The remaster, which also features the use of every Switch 2 feature, allowed players to download some approved mods on the handheld, but Cyberpunk 2077 will reportedly skip the feature on Nintendo’s platform.

If true, which seems likely considering the depth of Wes Nemo’s video, it wouldn’t be too surprising. Unfortunately, The Witcher 3: Remastered is an outlier for mod support on Nintendo platforms with many games featuring mods on console skipping the feature outright on the handheld.

For example, Fallout 4, which features user-made Creations on Xbox Series and PS5 does not allow players to download mods on Switch 2. This is the same for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition, which allows user-made expansions on Xbox, but not on the Nintendo system.

There is a possibility that mod support on Nintendo Switch 2 might be omitted from Cyberpunk 2077 for performance reasons. After all, CDPR’s ambitious first-person RPG can already suffer from performance issues on the handheld. Additionally, there is a possibility that mods could come to the handheld at a later date.

Nevertheless, considering the history of mods on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, there is also a possibility that Nintendo has to approve the use of user mods on a per-game basis. This would explain why games such as Fallout 4 don’t have mod support while The Witcher 3: Remastered does.

With that said, Cyberpunk 2077 is still getting the bulk of the game’s 2.5 update, including customisable cyberware, new hair styles, a new radio station with Edgerunners music, a new Edgerunners gig, new side quest, and the ability to dual wield pistols with a brand-new perk. It’s a solid update, even if a hefty chunk of it will be missing.
