Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is set to be the epic, expensive finale of Square Enix’s brilliant redux of its most iconic JRPG. While there’s no release date for the upcoming ending, the studio recently confirmed that the game is making “great progress” alongside Kingdom Hearts 4.
Unlike prior games in the series, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is in development as a multiplatform title from the start. Alongside the expected PS5 release, the game is also expected to come to PC, Xbox Series and even Nintendo Switch 2, the latter of which is receiving the first part of the trilogy in just a few months.
Speaking to Easy Allies at Tokyo Game Show, director Naoki Hamaguchi reconfirmed that development on the “third instalment” is “going very smoothly” across all platforms. However, there have been some minor annoyances due to the Xbox Series S’ lower amount of memory.
“As for the Xbox version, like many other publishers, I think we did see some issues with the lack of memory compared to other platforms,” Hamaguchi told the outlet. They later explained that the studio current has “designated teams working on each platform, so that our multiplatform approach won’t impact the development [of Part 3] whatsoever”.
Alongside the main console versions of the game, Square Enix also wants to make sure that the next game in the series is also playable on handhelds. As the studio works “really hard” on the Nintendo Switch 2 port of Rebirth, the third entry will also keep handhelds such as Valve’s Steam Deck in mind.
“When we look at the specs for the Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam Deck,” says Hamaguchi, “it’s really getting comparable to the PS5 and Xbox consoles,” they explained. “We do want to keep a focus on the consoles as well, but we also want to keep the handheld devices and their audiences in mind.”
As handhelds become more popular than ever, keeping their massive audiences in mind for future releases is a smart move. While Rebirth didn’t run great on the Steam Deck, many gamers found the game quite playable with some major compromises. Additionally, the first entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy as well as its Crisis Core spin-off proved very popular on the handheld.
Not much is known about Square Enix’s plans for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, but the game will be considerably different from previous entries. Hamaguchi previously revealed there will be a new gameplay experience for the finale, and it seems fans are in for a considerably darker experience than the happy-go-lucky adventure of Rebirth.
