Football Manager 26 is fast approaching with developer Sports Interactive now regularly releasing updates and information about the upcoming game.
While much has been made about FM moving to the Unity Engine, allowing for more realistic player animation and a more intuitive UI, improvements in the core gameplay have also been addressed – with scouting and player recruitment receiving well-deserved boosts.
FM 26 adds two new recruitment features
While the new ’tile’ system is about making the game easier to navigate for pros, whilst also reducing the barrier to entry for those jumping in for the first time, there are two major additions when it comes to player recruitment – Requirements and Pitch Opportunities.
How many times can you score in a row?

Requirements
According to SI, these have been added to ‘give you a more realistic and authentic’ experience when it comes to buying players. Through requirements, you’re able to communicate with every single outside club and specify exactly what sort of player you’re looking for.
The tool lets you create detailed ‘adverts’ where you can focus on what sort of player role you’re interested in. You can even clearly set what sort of playing time the prospect can expect, and whether you’re after someone to build out your squad or make a huge difference to your team’s performance.
Once you’ve identified your parameters, these details are then sent to every relevant club in the game, with recommendations coming in via your Director of Football based on the responses you get back. From there, you can decide whether to scout yourself or begin conversations with their respective agents.

Pitch Opportunities
You’re also able to see what requirements other clubs have put out, via something called the Transfer Room Out card. This means that if you have a player you’re looking to get rid of, you can directly respond and negotiate with interested parties.
As per requirements, you’re able to see detailed parameters outlined by clubs. For example, one club may be after a certain age profile or player looking to fill a squad. Have one-to-many strikers? This could be a quick and easy way to adjust your squad. On top of this, you’re still able to offer players to clubs via their Player Report
Smarter scouting
On top of the two major additions to player recruitment, more general improvements to scouting are also being rolled out this year. For example, your backroom staff will let you know if a player you’re scouting is a good fit with the formation you’re currently using. Sports interactive has also revealed a number of other changes, which we’ve detailed below. These include but are not limited to:
- Tweaks to AI squad building
- More loans with future fees and buyback clauses
- New transfer clauses for individual player awards
Meanwhile, for those looking to get their hands on the new FM early, you may be in luck. Studio boss Miles Jacobson may have outed when the beta, known as FM26 Advanced Access, is coming. As per a post on Reddit, the early access period could drop between October 15 and 21st, although nothing has been officially confirmed by SI.
