After years of waiting, Epic Games has finally introduced a major graphics upgrade to Fortnite, although the new feature only currently applies to the PC version of the game.
While players are currently reeling from Epic’s decision to kill multiple game modes overnight just after the start of the game’s Reassembly event, the battle royale game has finally introduced a very long-awaited change for PC gamers.
For years now, Fortnite on PC has been stuck with an older version of Nvidia’s DLSS technology. While effective, this old version of Nvidia’s image-upscaling technology has been around since June 2021, and has been completely surpassed by a number of better versions.
As of today, Fortnite users on PC can now use the much, much better DLSS 4 upscaling technology for sharper visuals at higher resolution while also increasing performance. This version of the technology makes use of Nvidia’s Transformer model as well which is even better at reconstructing visuals.
Previously, players were able to force the use of DLSS 4 into Fortnite, although the process was annoying for some and could introduce issues. With this latest update, Fortnite now looks better for all PC players using Nvidia GPUs, and could lead to some benefits outside of just PC gaming.
For example, the Nintendo Switch 2, which has its own bespoke version of Fortnite, does not make use of any DLSS technology. However, as the only console right now that can make use of Nvidia’s DLSS image reconstruction, we could see even higher resolutions and less blur on the Nintendo handheld.
It’s worth noting that, if DLSS does come to Nintendo Switch 2, it likely wouldn’t be the full-fat version of DLSS 4. although it is possible. Instead, many games on Nintendo’s handheld boast specific versions of the tech designed for a low-power handheld, which you can learn more about right here.
Additionally, while the introduction of DLSS 4 to the PC version of Fortnite is a fantastic grab for players, even those playing over a cloud gaming service like GeForce Now, PlayStation and Xbox players will never be able to benefit from this improved technology. As PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5. Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles all use AMD hardware, they sadly cannot benefit from the much better image upscaling.
