The Anniversary event in Marvel Rivals brought yet another currency. Despite being only a year old, the hero shooter has already had more than its fair share of different currencies, which has been quite confusing. The latest currency is free, yet many players are not happy with it.
During the event, you can earn 1500 Units for free by simply logging in. Unfortunately, there is a catch. These Units are available only for a limited time. This means that if you don’t spend them, they will disappear from your account. To make things worse, NetEase promoted these as regular Units before the launch of the event, which was simply misleading.
The new Marvel Rivals currency is wrong
It’s no secret that game developers try to keep their games more engaging in an attempt to increase the average playtime. We’ve seen it in many games, whether it’s limited-time events, Battle Passes, or something else. While most of these tactics are somewhat acceptable, the latest move by NetEase may be a bit too much.
Two weeks before the Anniversary event, the Marvel Rivals developer released a dev vision video, teasing all the upcoming content. In this video, NetEase revealed the event and all the free Units that will be available during it.

“You can join our Anniversary events to earn 2,500 Units and a free Legendary Jeff costume,” Guangyun Chen, the game’s creative director, said in the video. Unfortunately, instead of releasing all these Units for free, the development team split them into two separate currencies. Now, you can earn 1,000 regular Units and 1,500 limited-time ones.
These are two different Units, and while regular ones are permanent, the new currency will expire on December 18. In other words, you can spend these new Units only during the Anniversary event. If you don’t, they will vanish from your account as if you’d never earned them.
To make things worse, the Black Friday sale is over, and you can no longer take advantage of discounted skins. At the same time, almost every skin in the game costs more than 1,600 Units, which is another issue.

While you can use the new currency to obtain cosmetics during the event, chances are that 1,500 simply won’t be enough. You’ll likely end up spending your regular Units, or even worse, buying extra Lattice to complete the purchase.
NetEase has released numerous free Units and cosmetics over the past 12 months, giving everyone a chance to grab fancy new skins without spending a cent. The developer has undoubtedly done a great job with the game, but we hope that limited-time currency will not return in the future.
