The latest Marvel Rivals event introduces a beautiful new skin for Psylocke, which is a Legendary reward. Unfortunately, it also brings frustration, disappointment, and controversial gacha elements. This time, you cannot unlock an event skin by simply playing the game. Instead, you must rely on your luck to obtain it.
On the surface, things are not that bad. After all, you can acquire all the event items for 2,400 Units, which is usually how much a Legendary skin costs. On top of this, you can unlock all of the items for as low as 100 Units! However, when you start to dig deeper, you can see how poorly the event was done, and it’s no surprise that many players are voicing their complaints.
The new Marvel Rivals event brings gacha, and players are unhappy
Over the course of the past year, NetEase has added numerous currencies to Marvel Rivals, making it look more like a mobile game at times. The latest currency, limited-time Units, takes the cake, as it’s quite misleading.
However, this is just the tip of the iceberg, as the latest event made Marvel Rivals look even more like a mobile game with gacha elements.
Once you open the event screen, you will see six balloons that you can pop. The first pop costs 100 Units, while the second one costs 200. In total, you can have six pops that cost 2400 Units, which isn’t all that bad. Unfortunately, the balloons don’t have an equal chance of granting you the new Legendary skin in Marvel Rivals.

With six balloons, one might assume the chance of landing the Psylocke skin would be approximately 16.7%. In reality, the probability is capped at just 5% at the beginning. Lower-value rewards, such as a spray and an emoji bundle, are set at 21%. Once you pop a balloon, those basic rewards will bump to more than 27%, while the chance of drawing the skin will only increase to 5.26%.
If you are lucky, you can get the new skin with your first pop, which will grant you all the other items. While this is fantastic, we can probably all agree that this isn’t the way an event should be done.
This deceitful mechanic comes only a month after our interview with Guangyun Chen, who emphasized the importance of a consumer-friendly monetisation system in Marvel Rivals. Since then, NetEase has released both limited-time currency and a gacha-style event, which don’t sit right with players.
