PlayStation 5 Starfield Technical Specs

Starfield on PS5 has been optimized to take full advantage of the console's hardware and architecture, especially the unique features of the DualSense controller. Hereโ€™s the breakdown of the major features:

  • DualSense Immersive Audio: In-game audio logs and non-local ship intercoms will play directly through the DualSense controller speaker, pulling you deeper into the world.
  • Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers: Feel the unique kick of every weapon and the resistance of your ship's thrusters. The light bar on the controller will also dynamically reflect your health and ship integrity.
  • Performance Modes: PS5 players can choose between a 4K Visuals mode at 30 FPS or a Performance mode that targets 60 FPS. Additionally, PS5 Pro owners will enjoy even higher fidelity and more stable frame rates in both modes.

Pre-load Information

Space is vast, and so is the download size for Starfield. To make sure that youโ€™re not stuck watching a progress bar while your friends are already exploring Akila City, Bethesda has enabled pre-loading for all digital pre-orders. Here are the details:

  • Pre-load Start Date: April 5, 2026.
  • File Size: Approximately 135 GB on PlayStation 5.

Pro-tip: Make sure you have at least 150 GB of free space to account for the "Free Lanes" day-one patch and the Terran Armada DLC installation.

Gameplay Features: Into the Free Lanes and Beyond

For PlayStation players, the definitive version of Starfield starts with the upcoming Free Lanes update. This massive overhaul completely reimagines how you spend your time in the cockpit. Instead of simply fast-travelling between planets, the new system places flight entirely in your hands. Starfield producer Tim Lamb has explained that Free Lanes travel is completely under your control, meaning you can now manually navigate the vast distances of space, discovering hidden derelict ships and celestial anomalies that were previously hidden behind loading screens.

This manual flight isn't just about the view into the black, but about the unexpected encounters as well. The update introduces brand-new quests that take place entirely between planets, turning the void of space into a living, breathing (metaphorically, of course) environment filled with distress calls and wandering traders.

While you're out there exploring the furthest reaches of the galaxy, you won't have to do it alone. The Free Lanes update finally introduces a highly-requested feature โ€“ pets! However, don't expect to see a Golden Retriever running around your hab module. Producer Tim Lamb recently joked that in the lore of Starfield, traditional cats and dogs are likely all dead, meaning your new companions will be of a slightly more... "alien" variety.

Finally, the PS5 launch coincides with the Terran Armada DLC. This new story arc pits you against a rising army of advanced robots in the Incursion system, offering a darker, more tactical experience compared to the base game's focus on exploration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Starfield on PS5 include all previous updates?

Yes. The PlayStation 5 version is the most complete edition of the game to date. It includes the base game, the Shattered Space expansion (for Premium Edition owners), and every major quality-of-life update released since 2023, including the REV-8 land vehicle, improved surface maps, and the upcoming Free Lanes travel system.

Can I transfer my save from Xbox or PC to PS5?

Currently, there is no official cross-save support between the Xbox + PC platforms and the PlayStation 5. While your progress is shared between the Xbox console and the Microsoft Store PC version via "Xbox Play Anywhere," jumping to the PS5 requires starting a fresh journey in the Settled Systems.

Is there a physical disc version for PS5?

Yes, a physical Standard Edition will be available at major retailers on April 7, 2026. If you prefer the Premium Edition content but want a physical box, you can purchase the physical Standard Edition and the Digital Premium Upgrade separately.

What is "Cruise Mode" in the Free Lanes update?

Cruise Mode is a new flight mechanic that allows you to fly manually between planets within a single star system without using fast travel or seeing a loading screen. While in Cruise Mode, you can leave the pilot's seat to customize your ship, talk to your crew, or use workbenches while the ship continues its journey.

What are "Incursions" in the Terran Armada DLC?

Incursions are dynamic combat events triggered by the new Terran Armada faction. These enemies can deploy technology that disables your Grav Drive, forcing you to use Cruise Mode to either engage their fleet or navigate around the blockade. Defeating these Incursions is a primary way to earn the new X-Tech resource for high-end gear customization.

Do I need an internet connection to play?

While Starfield is a single-player game and can be played offline, you will need an internet connection to download the day-one Free Lanes update, access the Creations modding menu, and verify any digital DLC like Terran Armada.
