Nightdive Studios’ System Shock Remake has been greatly improved with a new patch on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

After releasing at the tail end of last year, many players on Nintendo Switch 2 were unhappy with the performance of the brilliant sci-fi immersive sim. After promising in an interview with FRVR that performance would be fixed, Nightdive has just released a huge patch for the game.

Nightdive explains that “performance has been significantly improved” on both handhelds. In fact, the game even renders at a higher resolution on the older 2017 handheld, now running up to 900p docked and 720p handheld with dynamic resolution.

As for Nintendo Switch 2, the game targets 1440p 60fps in Docked Mode and 1080p 60fps in Handheld Mode. The Switch 2 version also makes use of Joy-Con 2 Mouse Mode while both versions make use of Gyro controls. Additionally, the new patch includes multiple “bug fixes and enhancements” that weren’t present on launch.

“System Shock Version 2.1, the ‘Parity Patch,’ marks nearly ten years since the System Shock Remake project began,” Nightdive Studios producer Justin Khan said in a press release. “This patch represents countless lessons learned, the dedication of a small but determined team, and our commitment to refining the experience across every platform. Thank you for sticking with us through the ups and downs of that journey.”

While System Shock Remake didn’t launch in the most solid of states, Khan explained in a prior interview with FRVR that they learned a lot about working on Nintendo’s handhelds when creating the port.

Many of Nightdive’s releases are ports of classic games on their own internal Kex Engine whilst System Shock Remake was a port to handheld in Unreal Engine 4. Khan told FRVR that this was “the first time that we had ever attempted to do something like that with an engine that’s not ours”, and that led to a lot of unforeseen issues.

Right now, System Shock Remake is in a much better place, although there may still be some performance issues in some of the RPG’s late game areas. As a brilliant remake of one of the best sci-fi RPGs of all time, it’s definitely worth picking up.
