Ubisoft CEO says Far Cry 7 will push multiplayer even further to keep gamers playing even longer

Ever since the release of Crytek’s original Far Cry, the now-open world series has always dabbled with multiplayer. From the third game’s bespoke co-op mode to the co-op campaigns of other entries, the series is an underrated multiplayer gem. For Far Cry 7, Ubisoft wants to go even further.

Speaking at Saudi Arabia’s New Global Sport Conference, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained that the company is aiming to make multiplayer even more important for future games in the series, which would include Far Cry 7. (Thanks, GameFile)

While multiplayer has always been an underused part of the series, it has offered some fantastic experiences, and Ubisoft’s aim to turn prior games into map making toolkits for endless replayability appears to be inspiring the future of the franchise.

At the conference, Guillemot explained that the goal is “really to bring the multiplayer aspects more predominantly pushed, so that it can be played for a long time” by gamers. Guillemot didn’t explain exactly what this means or if it would be at the cost of the game’s strong single-player core.

While Far Cry has almost always boasted some form of multiplayer offering, the series is primarily enjoyed as a single-player open world adventure. Yes, Far Cry 5 and 6 can both be played entirely in co-op multiplayer throughout their sprawling campaigns, but the majority of players engage with the series on their lonesome.

Nevertheless, Ubisoft could work on adding more additional modes to the series such as using the games’ maps designed for single-player as the basis for a battle royale or extraction shooter. Following the dismal failure of the studio’s xDefiant multiplayer game as well as the online pirate game Skull and Bones, it makes sense that the studio is still looking to cash in on the popularity of live-service multiplayer somewhere.

At the time of writing, Far Cry 7 has not been announced, and there’s no potential release date for the game swirling around online.
