Blizzard’s beloved World of Warcraft finally has a console port… to the SEGA Dreamcast, and it’s gloriously crusty.

While the PC gaming community prepares for World of Warcraft: Forever next month, the original MMO has been ported to the SEGA Dreamcast with online multiplayer.

Shared on social media by Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Dreamcast porter Falco Girgis, Blizzard’s iconic MMORPG is playable on the console, albeit with an adorably low-resolution presentation. While rough to look at, the game is surprisingly playable, and players will be able to create their own physical discs for the homebrew port as well.

Ported by homebrew modder cypress, the MMO is “fully playable, and even runs surprisingly well for a new port. Girgis explains that the entire game fits over two discs “minus removed or inaccessible content (such as GM island) with all abilities and classes working”.

“The textures on the ground look pretty low resolution, but funnily enough, right after I was sent these captures, Crypress drastically improved their quality in the next build because bruce gave him a bunch of sh*t over the ground looking blurry in Discord. So that part has already been addressed.”

Additionally, the port supports “custom content for the Dreamcast” including pets, mounts, recipes, and quests. The modder explained that one player was walking around “with a Chu Chu Rocket mag from PSO”.

In this version of the game, World of Warcraft on Dreamcast also supports backported maps from future expansions that work “in tandem with the vanilla PvP systems”> Finally, the game has “2X exp until level 20, when it gets reduced”.

After 20 years of waiting for Blizzard to release a console version of World of Warcraft, it’s quite funny that the game has made its way to the SEGA Dreamcast, even in this fairly scuffed state. It’s an adorably crusty way to play the brilliant MMORPG.

World of Warcraft on the SEGA Dreamcast is extremely fitting. For many, with Phantasy Star Online, SEGA’s iconic final console was their introduction to MMORPGs. (Hey, it was for me!) While most gamers would probably prefer an official console port to Xbox or PlayStation, it’s still awesome to see the game make its way to SEGA’s long-discontinued console.

Despite its long-dead nature, the Dreamcast has never stopped being a haven for awesome, impossible ports. Right now, modders are working hard to bring the 2001 OG Xbox exclusive Halo: Combat Evolved to the platform, which is just as exciting as WoW, and it’s a sign that there’s still a lot of life left in cute little SEGA box.
