After working on the video game adaptation of A Quiet Place and assisting in the development of Mafia: The Old Country, Italian game developer Stormwind Games is returning to its in-house horror series with Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy.

The conclusion of the studio’s survival horror franchise, Red Nun’s Legacy is designed to be the most Italian horror game yet. Set in a decaying noble residence on the slopes of Mount Etna, players will uncover the mystery of six missing Sicilian girls and tie up the horror franchise into a nice bow.

Speaking to FRVR ahead of the game’s reveal, game director Antonio Cutrona explained that Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy is designed first-and-foremost to be a classic survival horror game. While this third entry adds more frequent combat encounters compared to its predecessors, the core experience revolved around scares and puzzles just like the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 titles we all fell in love with.

However, injected within that survival horror DNA is an adoration for Italian horror cinema, namely the works of Suspuria director Dario Argento. “We are leveraging on that one, on homaging horror culture, especially Italian horror culture,” they continued, explaining that the original game was inspired by Clock Tower, which itself was inspired by Argento’s Phenomena. “It’s like closing a loop even in that regard,” Cutrona continued. “We came back where we started this all, back into Italy and Italian horror, and that’s what we want to push.”

Stormwind CCO Daniele Azara explained that horror is “a language that is evolving”. While there are “strict horror pillars” that the genre must abide by, especially as the games focus on psychological horror, it’s a language that is constantly changing as new creators continue to push the boundaries around them.

As Italian horror creators, it’s impossible not to be inspired by the earlier works of Dario Argento, with Cutrona noting “Suspiria especially” as a major part of Remothered’s DNA. “The protagonist’s name, Susan, is not by chance,” the director said, “that is the same name as the protagonist of Suspiria so the name in itself was a little bit of an homage.”

The game director explained that there is “a responsibility to all gamers, regardless of region” when creating a new game, but “of course there is a sense of proudness in being able to create a horror game set in Sicily”. As one of the few Italian game studios designing a game set in Italy, the team is “pushing heavy on that aspect in order to make it truly resonate” with Italian gamers.

Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy is set to launch later this year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series XIS, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC,
