Original Saints Row designer Chris Stockman has backed the alleged push for Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 6 to be priced at $100. While there is no official plan by Rockstar and publisher 2K to charge the unprecedented price for the upcoming open world game, its potential has proven controversial.

Speaking in an interview with Esports Insider, Stockman explained that not every game should or could be priced at $100. However, if any game “deserves” the price, it would be Rockstar’s upcoming open world game.

In the interview, Stockman explained that “they’re the only ones that can get away with it”, saying: “I don’t think it’s a rising tide that floats all boats. I think that there’ll be a tremendous amount of backlash if everyone switched to $100. Not all games are created equal. I think GTA is the only one that can get away with it, and I hope they do. I really hope it’s $100. I think it deserves to be $100.”

While game studios have been raising prices frequently this generation with games like Mario Kart World charging players $80 for the privilege to play, GTA 6 is an outlier. Compared to games like Borderlands 4—which also attempted to raise prices—the sheer production value of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto game might actually deserve a higher cost.

“The scope and magnitude of this production deserves that price tag, but not everything is treated equally. It would be a disaster if everyone tried to match them,” the Saints Row designer told the outlet.

At the time of writing, very little concrete information is known about the upcoming Grand Theft Auto game. However, the game has been reported to be the most expensive video game production in history with an estimated budget of around $2 billion over the game’s lengthy development.

Speaking to Variety earlier this year, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that the eventual price announcement will “come from Rockstar in due time”, explaining that the price of the game is not set in stone until closer to release. However, the CEO hinted that the pricetag for the new game won’t be massively inflated compared to other releases.

“Our goal always is to deliver more value than what we charge, so we’ve had variable pricing at the company forever,” he explained. “As you know, the approach of the industry is to launch at a premium price, sometimes with special editions, and over time, typically to reduce the price to enhance the overall size of the market. We do the very same thing. I think, probably more than most, we’re highly focused on making sure that the experience is great, not just because the game itself is great, but also because consumers have paid a fair price for it.”

The last official update on GTA 6 was the release of its second trailer in May 2025, At the time of writing, the game is set to be released exclusively on Xbox Series and PS5 consoles on May 26, 2025. There is currently no release date for a PC or Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.
