Released on the same day as Bungie’s Marathon, Slay the Spire 2 has broken all expectations, including those of its developers. While the game has released on Steam early access to record numbers, its devs are now pushing back against fans that want to support the game through microtransactions.
While microtransactions, even cosmetic-only ones, are largely hated in paid releases, Slay the Spire 2 studio Mega Crit is actively pushing back against players that are requesting paid skins to support the game.
“We’re microtransaction haters,” Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano said in an interview with Destructoid, adding that “a lot of our players threaten to buy all and any cosmetics we may ever release.”
Yano explained that the whole design point of both Slay the Spire games is that everyone gets everything, and players who want anything extra can just mod in what they feel is missing.
“Both in STS 1 and STS 2, you can replace entire swathes of code, so you can kind of do anything,” they told the outlet. “A lot of our focus this time around is reducing friction, so players have more resources and easier entry points to work with mods.”
While the team works on additional content for the game following the title’s early access launch, Yano explained that it’s important that everyone has access to the same content. If a cosmetic is available, it’s available to everyone; if gameplay is available, that’s available to everyone.
“We really want players to experience all of the same content as discussion of game content and balance is sort of our lifeblood,” the developer explained.
While fans are already happy with the current state of Slay the Spire 2, Yano explains that the game is “missing so much content”, although the team isn’t entirely sure what exactly they will be updating over the course of the year. “Hopefully pure content. The good stuff,” they add.
With all of that said, don’t expect any microtransaction skins in Slay the Spire 2, even if you really like the game. Instead, you can use whatever money you would’ve spent on skins for another game, or a sandwich, or a charity, or a second sandwich. Literally anything else, really.
