One of a surprising number of Trekkie games announced earlier this year, Gamexcite’s upcoming Star Trek Voyager: Across the Unknown is a curious strategy game that puts players in control of the iconic Starfleet ship.
Described as a “story-driven survival strategy game” with “rogue-like elements”, the upcoming video game retells the journey of Captain Janeway and her crew as they attempt to return home from the far-off Delta Quadrant.
Over the game, you’ll have to find resources and manage crew members to keep the ship operational, keep your staff happy, and make sure Janeway has her coffee. However, you’ll also have to make difficult decisions in powerful What If scenarios that can greatly change the events of the show the game is based on.
Alongside the hard choices, there is one extremely easy choice thrown into the mix: the murder of the hideous and annoying Tuvix. The awful transporter mistake that merged crew members Neelix and Tuvok into one horrible-but-sentient being, the separation (and therefore murder) of the character was just one of the moral quandaries that the crew of Voyager had to face.
In the new strategy game, you will have to choose whether to separate Tuvix into their two separate beings or not. If you don’t, then you’re down a crew member, and also Tuvix remains a constant presence… unless they mysteriously perish due to some other choice.
Of course, while this is a classic Star Trek moral dilemma, it’s also one where everyone knows the answer because everyone despises Tuvix. In fact, just recently, Captain Janeway actor Kate Mulgrew called the separation of the two an “easy choice”.
Speaking to fans at the Trek to New Jersey convention, via TrekMovie, Mulgrew said: “Janeway did the only thing she could do. Was she going to keep Tuvix over those two guys? I loved those two guys. Easy choice. Had to make it look tough. But easy, easy.”
Over the decades, the Tuvix dilemma has been mocked for being one of Trek’s simpler dilemmas. Really, it should have the same weight as a story like I, Borg, which is one of the best episodes of the latter Next Generation run, but it simply fails due to Tuvix being nauseating to look at and annoying to listen to. And I’m looking forward to getting to wipe them out myself.
Star Trek Voyager: Across the Unknown currently has no concrete release date, but the game will launch on Windows, Xbox and PlayStation sometime in the future.
