Starbreeze has confirmed that new updates are coming to Payday 2 more than a decade on from its release as the game’s sequel struggles to find players.
While Starbreeze itself is focused on creating additional content for the game’s controversial sequel, Payday 3, the company has hired a new development team to work on future updates, including quality-of-life improvements, on the second game in the series.
For future updates, Payday 2 will be worked on by RAID: World War II developer Sidetrack. Formed by ex-Payday modders, the team’s World War 2-themed co-op game was built in the second game’s ageing Diesel Engine, a toolset that was abandoned Unreal Engine 4 for its sequel.
“We’re excited to announce that we’re partnering with Sidetrack Games to support the PC-versions of PAYDAY 2 with quality-of-life improvements and general game fixes,” Starbreeze explained in a social media post.
“Sidetrack (formerly known as the M.U.G. Team) is a talented team with deep roots in the Payday modding community,” they continued. “Their work on RAID: World War II showed that they have the skill and perseverance to deliver quality updates over a long time. They know the Payday 2 engine inside and out, and they’ve already gotten started.”
The first update from the team will go live for PC players on Thursday, October 23, 2025 following a livestream on the same day. This first update will focus on improving the stability of the game as well as introducing some new gameplay improvements.
While Starbreeze didn’t claim that new content will be coming to the popular four-player heist game, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. Just recently, the company added a new DLC subscription service for players to enjoy all post-launch content at a monthly fee which would work well with new maps and weapons.
It’s also worth noting that the new updates are only focused on the PC version of the game with no plans of improving the console versions of the game. The last update for the game’s console versions was in 2019 with no plans on giving those customers access to later updates and additional DLC.
