Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 is, annoyingly, skipping PC for its November 2026 launch, but the CEO of publisher Take-Two admits that the platform is now the go-to target for most developers.
While the Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest-selling console of all time and PS5 sales are continuing to climb, the PC has become the predominant market share for many major releases. For example, both Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders—two of the highest selling games of the year—have sold over half of their copies on PC.
Speaking on CNBC’s Squawk Box show, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that consoles aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, but the industry is shifting towards PC as the dominant platform for major releases. (All bar GTA 6, which Take-Two publishes.)
“I think it’s moving towards PC and business is moving towards open rather than closed,” Zelnick told the news outlet. “But if you define console as the property, not the system, then the notion of a very rich game that you engage in for many hours that you play on a big screen — that’s never going away.”
The shift towards PC audiences has been rampant over the past decade with both Xbox and PlayStation making the majority of their first-party titles available on the platform. Additionally, Valve has been attempting to make PC gaming more accessible with the successful Steam Deck handheld and the upcoming Steam Machine.
Nevertheless, Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 will not be launching day-and-date on PC with an estimated additional year wait for the PC port. In an interview with IGN, Zelnick explained that “historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms”, but there’s no word on why that is the case with the upcoming game.
Additionally, Zenick explained that PC is “more and more important” for Take-Two as the market share continues to favour the platform with the CEO saying he “wouldn’t be surprised to see that trend continue”. Of course, in the case of GTA 6, an exclusive console period is more likely to cause some gamers to double-dip on the title due to the sheer amount of hype surrounding it.
Zelnick is certainly far from alone when it comes to the increasing presence of PC gaming with the next-generation Xbox seemingly set to be a Windows PC with a console-friendly skin, similar to the Steam Machine. After decades of console wars, it seems that the war is simply ending with only PlayStation and Nintendo left in the fight, and Nintendo just does its own thing anyway.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is now set to release on November 19, 2026, just in time to kill all sales of Halo: Campaign Evolved. Oh, Master Chief, I’m sorry they’ve done this to you.
