Beyond Good and Evil 2 is seemingly still in some form of development. Originally announced in 2008 before resurfacing at Ubisoftโs E3 2017 conference, the game has spent so long in development that now holds the record for longest development period of a AAA project, a record last held by Duke Nukem Forever.
Following the death of creative director Emile Morel in 2023, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is now spearheaded by Fawzi Mesmar, who also worked on Star Wars Outlaws.
While Ubisoft has stayed relatively silent on the gameโs continued development, the game was claimed to still be in development by leaker Tom Henderson earlier this year. โWhat Fawzi Mesmar and the team have done looks pretty cool,โ Henderson said. โItโs all about execution.โ
In a new update, Ubisoft has released a number of new job listings for the game. On the Ubisoft Montpellier website, the studio is looking for a technical sound designer, lead quest designer, technical lead network programmer and more to work on the long-awaited game.
While the job listings detail what that roles will entail, they more interestingly gives an updated synopsis on what the game actually is.
The job listing reveals that the current version of the game is still being built inside the new Voyager engine that was shown off back in 2017, and still focuses on being able to seamlessly move from dense open-world cities into space.
โBeyond Good & Evil 2 is an action-adventure open world game set in a captivating space opera universe and the direct prequel to the 2003 cult classic,โ the job post reads. โBased on a breakthrough technology driven by the proprietary Voyager engine, Beyond Good & Evil 2 aims to offer a seamless experience of exploration and space piracy across a solar system full of exotic locations, colorful characters and mysteries to uncover, solo or with friends. So, if you are ready for an adventure like no other, come join forces with us to build System 3!โ
The existence of the lead network programmer role also points to the continued development of the gameโs multiplayer focus. When the game was announced, Ubisoft explained that the game would be an always-online multiplayer game where players could drop-in and drop-out of co-op. At the time of writing, this appears to still be the case.
The continued development of Beyond Good and Evil 2 is an incredibly interesting one, especially as many games get cancelled in far less time than this project has been given. However, considering the Anniversary Edition of the original game included references to the prequel, we shouldnโt be too surprised.
Of course, there is still no release date for Ubisoftโs development hell project, and thereโs very little new information. Nevertheless, it does seem that the team is still set on fulfilling the vision it promised back in 2017, and thatโs still at least a little bit exciting.
