Developed by Iron Harvest developer KingArt Games, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is a glorious return to the RTS combat of the original game. Bolstered by an overhauled, extremely-detailed Sync-Kill system, the new game aims to be one of the most cinematic games in the genre yet.

In a previous article, we reported that King Art games has massively expanded the Sync-Kill system to make sure “every action has a counterpart”. Powered by a new “combat director”, the system is designed to make players care about individual units on the battlefield, not just hero characters on the field.

In a recent Warhammer TV discussion, senior game designer Elliott Verbiest revealed that one of the key pieces of feedback they’ve received from playtests is that they want battles to last longer just so they can see the game’s detailed animations more.

“We had a few closed alpha playtests,” Verbiest said (transcribed by PCG), “and one of the key points of feedback that we got and that really showed that we have something special here was, ‘Hey, could you maybe balance the combat to take a little bit longer? Because we really want to see all these sync-kills and all the sync-melee combat that you guys have got going on.’”

The game designer explained that fans were enthralled by the cinematic nature of skirmishes in the game, saying: “people found it so spectacular that they wanted to keep seeing more of it.” As someone who spent hours watching sync-kill animation videos of the original game (even after playing it), this is exactly what Dawn of War 4 needed to be.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 still doesn’t have a specific release date at the time of writing. Right now, the game only has a broad release date of sometime in 2026, exclusively on PC for now. (If you’re a console player looking for a grand-scale RTS, Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series machines.)

For more on Dawn of War 4, read about the game’s “overwhelmingly single-player” design, although it will still feature the same multiplayer suite fans are used to. Additionally, the game will not feature the series’ original protagonist Gabriel Angelos as the third game in the series made him too damn powerful. Maybe it was all the flips he was doing in DOW3.
