Out of every character in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s fair to say that Neil Newbon’s suave vampire Astarion is, by far, the most iconic. While the character is frequently turning up in external D&D materials, Newbon has reiterated a burning desire to play the character again.

Speaking in a recent episode of the Ready, Aim, Fire Podcast, Newbon said that he “of course” wants to revisit the role of Astarion again. While Larian Studios won’t be making a Baldur’s Gate 4, although Hasbro wants to make a sequel, the actor is up to revisit the character in any medium.

“Yeah, sure,” Newbon responded when asked if he’d like to play the character again, “especially [in] live-action. I’d love to play him as live-action. Luckily, I look like him.”

When asked if the character’s face was purposefully designed to mimic his looks, Newbon explained that “over time the characters did start resembling us”, pointing to the face sculpt for the game’s githyanki party member Lae’zel.

“Devora Wilde, absolutely, Lae’zel looks like her which is crazy because the nose is so randomly, so wildly different,” he said. “I think they just kinda tapered it towards us, I believe. They used video reference, so it wasn’t HMC (head-mounted cameras) work, it was video… which the animators are then using to follow our facial expressions.”

Newbon explained that they “weren’t scanned or anything”, allowing the game’s developers to make their characters look as different or as similar as they liked. However, the actor does see a stark similarity between himself and Astarion’s looks.

When asked if the actor had been approached to play Astarion in a live-action TV series of Baldur’s Gate 3, Newbon responded: “Are you asking me to say something that I absolutely cannot talk about? Sure, no, I will not talk about it.”

Following his work on Baldur’s Gate 3, Newbon is working on a new live-action psychological horror game dubbed Dead Take. Hopefully, the actor will also have some role, even if a small one, in Larian’s next upcoming turn-based CRPG: Divinity.

At the time of writing, no Divinity release date has been confirmed by Larian Studios, although the game will launch in early access when Larian is ready. Described as Larian “unleashed” by CEO Swen Vincke, the upcoming CRPG aims to evolve on everything BG3 did so well.
