After the staggering success of Baldurโs Gate 3, itโs safe to say that the gaming world has been holding its collective breath to see what Larian Studios would do next. The wait for answers finally ended at The Game Awards 2025, where Swen Vincke and his team officially pulled back the curtain on their next massive project: Divinity. While the upcoming game isn’t titled Divinity: Original Sin 3, this new entry marks a monumental return to the universe that put Larian on the map. If you are itching to know when you can actually play it, here is everything we know so far about the release window and development progress based on recent interviews and official statements.
When Is the Divinity Release Date?
As of right now, Larian Studios has not set a specific calendar date for the full launch of Divinity. However, we can make some fairly educated guesses based on the studio’s current timeline. During a series of interviews following the game’s reveal, Swen Vincke confirmed that the team has already been working on the title for about two years and that it has recently moved into full production.
Our Divinity Release Date Prediction
In a conversation with Bloomberg, Vincke noted that he considers a three-to-four-year development cycle much “healthier” than the six-year marathon that was required for Baldurโs Gate 3. Since full production is now in full swing as of late 2025, a realistic window for the 1.0 release would likely fall somewhere in 2028 or 2029.
The Early Access Roadmap
If a three-year wait feels like an eternity, there is some very good news. Larian has confirmed that they plan to stick to the blueprint that made their previous hits so polished, namely Early Access.
Every major Larian success, from the original Original Sin to Baldurโs Gate 3, spent significant time in Early Access to gather player feedback. Vincke has explicitly stated that Divinity will likely follow this path. While he mentioned that a 2026 Early Access launch is “unlikely,” the door seems wide open for a 2027 Divinity Early Access release. This would likely allow fans to play through the first act while the developers refine the massive scope of the later game.
What is Swen Vincke Saying About the Project
The hype for this game isn’t just coming from the fans โ itโs coming from the developers themselves. Vincke has described Divinity as “us unleashed,” suggesting that being free from the licensed constraints of Dungeons & Dragons has allowed the team to push their own systems to the next level.
He recently told IGN that the game is “bigger” than Baldurโs Gate 3, which is a staggering thought for anyone who spent 150 hours on a single playthrough of the latter. Because Larian owns the Divinity IP, they are building the mechanics from the ground up specifically for a digital experience rather than trying to translate tabletop dice rolls into code. Vincke has promised a “next-level turn-based RPGโ that maintains the studio’s signature freedom of choice, but with even more cinematic storytelling.
Why Isn’t the Game Titled Original Sin 3?
One of the biggest surprises of the reveal was the simple title, Divinity. Larianโs Publishing Director, Michael Douse, had previously cooled expectations by saying there were “no plans for Original Sin 3,” which turned out to be a bit of clever wordplay.
By dropping the “Original Sin” subtitle, Larian is positioning this game as a soft reboot or a fresh starting point for their game franchise. The goal is to create a definitive version of the Rivellon universe that is welcoming to players who only know Larian through Baldur’s Gate 3, while still offering lore progression for long-time series veterans.
From what little we’ve seen so far, it offers a darker, more mature glimpse into the Divinity universe than the previous titles, matching perhaps the closest to the studio’s earliest (and unfortunately almost forgotten) games, like Divine Divinity. Also, is it just us, or is it giving strong Tyranny flashbacks? Hopefully, we’ll find out more soon enough!
The road to Rivellon might still be a long one, but given Larianโs track record, the wait is usually more than worth it. We will be keeping a close eye on any developer updates as the project moves through production, so check back regularly!
