Larian Studios’ Divinity announcement at The Game Awards 2025 celebration shook the gaming world. While eyes are peeled for the upcoming turn-based CRPG, others are turned to the past with Baldur’s Gate 3 sales spiking after the new game’s announcement.
While Divinity’s announcement did come with its own set of controversies, which has caused Larian to bar the use of Generative AI for its development, Baldur’s Gate 3 and its predecessor Divinity: Original Sin 2 has only continued to sell.
Over the past few weeks, Baldur’s Gate 3 has seen an explosion in players on Steam. As WolfheartFPS on Twitter pointed out, the game managed to hit a recent peak of 110,309 players on January 18, 2026, an incredible feat for an almost three-year-old single-player game.
However, Larian’s other titles have seen similar boosts. On January 4, 2026, Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition say a recent peak concurrent player count of 27,063 on Steam (via Steam Charts). Additionally, on the same day, Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition rose to 5,878 concurrent players on Steam, a huge jump from a low of 587 concurrents in November.
Speaking on Twitter, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke confirmed that sales for prior Larian games “have been incredible” following the new game’s reveal.
“Sales for both BG3 and D:OS 2 have been incredible since the announcement of Divinity,” the CEO confirmed. “D:OS 2 really surprised us by having its best month since release in 2017. Wish I’d removed the squirrel in time.”
With Baldur’s Gate 3 Astarion actor Neil Newbon recently explaining that there won’t be another game like the RPG “either ever or for a very, very, very long time”, it seems that his words are holding true. Very few games manage to have as long a tail as Larian’s latest RPG with massive single-player player counts usually exclusive to Bethesda RPGs.
What’s clear is that the hype for Divinity is clearly unmatched, despite the fact that there is currently no Divinity release date. With the game expected to launch in early access in a number of years, it’s going to be a long time until there’s a new Larian RPG to play.
