Path to Menzoberranzan is, by far, the most ambitiious Baldur’s Gate 3 mod in development right now. Rivaled only by Mad Mage’s Domain, a custom campaign adaptation of Dungeon of the Mad Mage, this upcoming mod aims to be a full game within Larian’s RPG.
Announced in 2024, Path to Menzoberranzan currently has hundreds of fans working on the experience. When it’s finished—whenever that ends up being—the game will have a full campaign set in the second game’s Athkatla, and will have six-to-eight custom companions.
As the scope of the project has increased, the team behind the project have pushed back the date of the campaign’s first playable alpha. With more designers, artists and more than originally planned, the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 mod will look, sound and play better, and the first playable demo should showcase that.
In a project update shared on the Path to Menzoberranzan Discord channel, the team estimated that the mod’s alpha will be playable in the first half of 2026. This alpha will feature the game’s prologue which is estimated to be similar in scope to the Nautiloid introduction of Larian’s RPG.
In Act 1, players will visit the iconic City of Coin, aka Athkatla, and explore Jon Irenicus’ dungeon, which players will know from the second Baldur’s Gate game. After that, the party will journey to the titular Menzoberranzan and Act 3 will be set within it, just like how the finale of BG3 is set in the titular city.
Path to Menzoberranzan’s development is incredibly promising with the team crafting fully-voiced companions and NPCs with a host of volunteers as well as original music. Additionally, players will be able to encounter brand-new side quests alongside the game’s campaign, just like a full-fledged release.
Following the release of the alpha, the Path to Menzoberranzan team aims to bring updates to the mod at a regular basis. However, the team wants to make sure that every update includes a significant portion of the main story every time, so don’t expect especially rapid updates for the custom campaign.
At FRVR, we’ve had the opportunity to talk to the developers behind the project, and the excitement from the team is palpable. While many fan projects don’t get off the ground, or end up having controversies like Skyblivion, the team behind the Baldur’s Gate 3 mod is one of the most passionate we’ve ever come across.
