After launching as the biggest game in the United States and breaking all previous sales records, Battlefield 6 is struggling to keep its player base outside of its core audience. Nevertheless, the bombastic FPS game plods forward with the game’s Season 2 update now available for everyone to download.
Since launch, the complaints surrounding Battlefield 6 have been very clear from the community: the UI is horrendous, the matchmaking is woefully inconsistent, the lack of a server browser is infuriating, and there’s a severe lack of larger maps. Unfortunately, it looks like none of this will be addressed anytime soon.
Speaking to The Gamer ahead of Season 2’s launch, Battlefield 6 producer Phil Girette explained that Battlefield Studios needs more time to bring larger maps to the game as they’re some of the hardest parts of the game to make. While the game’s latest map, Containment, is quite sizeable, fans are still waiting for a map like Dragon Valley or Bandar Desert to be added to the new game.
“We see that feedback, and hear it very loudly,” the producer said. “More maps is, of course, something that we will look more into. But also maps are one of the most time-intensive things that we build. We’ll need some more time.”
Girette explained that the team wants to “make sure that the maps hit the quality and match the expectations of what the players want” with Battlefield 4’s fan-favourite map Golmund Railway currently in the testing phase “early on Labs now”.
While thoughts are currently mixed on Battlefield 6 Season 2, the game’s new update is now the benchmark for Battlefield Studios’ continued support of the multiplayer FPS game. Speaking to TechRadar, Girette explained that the game’s pace was broken by “the extension we did of Season 1”, and that Season 2 will dictate the pace going forward.
“Everyone sat together and said, ‘This is really, really strong.’ We want to use Season 2 as kind of the foundation going forward – this is the level we need to hit’. We hope that the players think the same, but I think this is going to be the strongest season [yet],” they said.
Right now, Battlefield 6’s player numbers have yet to bounce back from their current slump following the release of Season 2. However, even with the lower player numbers, EA and Battlefield Studios at least seem dedicated to supporting the game for the time being.
