EA’s Battlefield 6 has officially dethroned Call of Duty as the United States’ best-selling game of 2025. After a two-decade battle, EA’s large-scale modern military shooter has taken the sales crown for the first time ever.
Mat Piscaella of video game analytics firm Circana revealed a list of the best-selling games of 2025 in the United States with Battlefield 6 not only beating Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, but also taking the number one spot in the list of best-selling games.
Battlefield 6 was celebrated on launch for being a true return-to-form for the popular multiplayer series. While player counts has lowered since launch—especially with the rise of other popular multiplayer games like Arc Raiders—the game is still the best-selling entry in the series’ history.
As for Call of Duty, the sales numbers paint a much different story with Black Ops 7 resting as the fifth best-selling game in the series. While not a terrible standing for any game, this does mark the first time since 2008 that CoD has not held either the first or second spot on the best-sellers list.
Prior to this year, there have only been three games that have dethroned CoD on the top-ten best-sellers list: GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Hogwarts Legacy. Since 2008, Call of Duty has always populated one of the top two spots.
As for why Black Ops 7 has failed to grab audiences while Battlefield 6 has, this may be due to the game’s critical reception. On launch, players lambasted the military shooter for silly skins, a terrible campaign, poor multiplayer, and the inclusion of cheap, awful-looking AI art for its calling cards and other assets.
Nevertheless, this is a win for Battlefield 6 with EA’s shooter taking home the crown for its first time ever. However, all eyes are currently on the game’s post-launch support which some would claim to be lacking compared to other games.
At the time of writing, the game is still in its first season, and players are still calling for larger-scale maps and other additions that are currently missing from the game. Season 2 is currently scheduled to launch on February 17, 2026 and will add a new map, Contaminated, as well s a rebuilt version of Golmund Railway from Battlefield 4.
