Danganronpa 2×2 devs admit the game’s delay was “inevitable” as they want to play GTA 6 on release

Spike Chunsoft’s Danganronpa 2×2 has been delayed from late 2026 into early 2027. The upcoming visual novel developed by Gemdrops and Too Kyo Games was delayed just recently with the delay causing fans to make joke memes about the game releasing after GTA 6.

As it turns out, GTA 6 is actually a major factor behind the visual novel’s recently release date push. While some would assume it’s so the visual novel can enjoy a release period not adorned by Rockstar’s pre-order-record-breaking monolith, it’s actually so the developers can enjoy the open world game themselves.

Speaking to Crunchyroll, producer Shohei Sakakibara and series creator Kazutaka Kodaka explained that they wouldn’t be able to make the “best possible experience” while also playing Grand Theft Auto 6.

“Of course, we wanted more development time,” Sakakibara told the anime platform. “Very natural, right? But separate from that, there’s a certain AAA/AAAA title that is gonna be released soon, so we wanted to avoid that a little bit.”

When asked if that massive “AAA/AAAA title” was indeed Grand Theft Auto 6, Kodaka confirmed that it is indeed Rockstar’s upcoming behemoth. “I wouldn’t have time to make the game while playing GTA VI, so it was inevitable that we moved the release time,” he laughed.

While Danganronpa 2×2 and GTA 6 are indeed very different, no, completely different games, there are undoubtedly overlapping fans. In fact, just checking the comments of the aforementioned meme even has fans joking that the delay will allow them to play Rockstar’s game. “This is actually the reason why I’m fine with the delay, I can focus on GTA 6 while waiting for 2×2,” one fan said.

Honestly, even just the honesty behind the game’s delay has me batting in Danganronpa’s corner. Of course, there’s undoubtedly a little bit more to the delay than just giving devs the chance to play Grand Theft Auto 6. Of course, there’s already a very competitive sales market in Fall 2026, and there’s likely some additional polish needed as well.

Danganronpa 2×2 now releases sometime in 2027 on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
