Get ready to see the world from a much lower (and much more flexible and tentacly) perspective. Darwin’s Paradox is the upcoming action-adventure from ZeDrimeTim and Konami that puts you in the suction-cupped shoes (or tentacles) of Darwin, an octopus who has been plucked from the ocean and dropped into a high-tech industrial nightmare. The game is a mix of 50s sci-fi aesthetics and modern cinematic platforming. Letโ€™s see when we can start on Darwinโ€™s journey back to the sea.

Gameplay Features

The best way to think about Darwinโ€™s Paradox! is as a “stealth-platformer” that really leans into the physics of being an octopus. You aren’t playing as a soldier with a gun โ€“ you’re a small, vulnerable creature in a high-tech industrial complex where everything (from the security bots to the heavy machinery) is designed to squish you on sight. This creates a truly unique movement style where the ceiling is just as much of a floor as the ground is. You’ll spend a lot of time scaling vertical pipes and clinging to moving conveyor belts to stay out of the line of sight of the Metal-Gear-inspired security cameras.

What really makes the gameplay loop sing is the camouflage mechanic. Darwin canโ€™t just turn invisible; instead, he has to physically match the texture and colour of whatever heโ€™s touching. If youโ€™re pressed against a wooden crate, you look like wood; if youโ€™re on a cold metal floor, you take on that steel sheen. It adds this layer of tension where you have to perfectly time your movements between patrols. To help you out, youโ€™ve also got an ink shooter that works as a projectile above ground to blind robots or short-circuit electronics, while underwater, it acts as your primary propulsion and smoke screen. Itโ€™s a clever mix of environmental puzzles and stealthy sneaking that really rewards patience and out-of-the-box thinking. And we all know how octopi and boxes interact.

Darwinโ€™s Paradox Demo: Try Before You Buy

If you aren’t quite ready to commit to the full escape just yet, Konami has released a hefty playable demo aptly titled the Tactical Octopus Action Demo. Itโ€™s available right now on all platforms, meaning on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store).

This isn’t just a quick teaser, but a substantial 45-to-60 minute slice of the early game. Youโ€™ll get to explore both the industrial “UFood” factory floors and the murky underwater sewer systems. As a special treat for fans, the demo features a limited-time “Sneaky Snake” skin, which is a direct homage to Solid Snake. With this skin, Darwin gets to sport a familiar bandana and tactical look while hiding in cardboard boxes.

Best of all, you don’t have to worry about replaying the opening hour when the full game drops. Your save data from the demo carries over to the full version on the same platform, so you can pick up exactly where Darwin left off on April 2.
