Bungie is reportedly in “extremely early development” on the long-requested Destiny 3, an entirely new game in the studio’s flagship MMO series.
With Destiny 2 player numbers continuing to drop like a lead balloon and parent company Sony expressing major disappointment at the studio’s performance, Bungie has reportedly started work on a third game in the series.
The information comes from Colony Deaks, a very accurate Destiny and Marathon leaker that has released a large number of accurate leaks regarding Bungie projects. However, as the project is still in very early development, it will be a number of years before the game is released.
“Yes, Destiny 3 is in extremely early development. Some of you may have seen a tweet early this afternoon that mentioned that,” the leaker said on social media. “We have been sitting on the info for a few weeks now and wanted to wait to talk about this seeing as it is in such an early state.”
“We plan to share more info in the coming months as we wait on the larger scale things to develop and take shape,” they continued. “Sit tight.”
As for the near future, the focus is still on Destiny 2’s ongoing Fate saga with the new Renegades expansion set to release next week. The leaker explained that the Fate Saga will continue “for at least 2 more years”, and full development of the third game will start after the second game is wrapped up.
Nevertheless, Bungie does appear to be working on Destiny 3, which should be designed to bring in new players and appease older fans. Alongside missteps with content, the underlying technology that powers the current game is creaking. Additionally, it would be nice if the next game in the series is designed in a way where content players paid for isn’t taken away at random intervals.
With a significant development time required for a game of Destiny’s scale, we likely won’t see Destiny 3 until sometime in 2030, if not later. However, for long-time players who feel burnt by the ongoing state of the current game, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
