Blizzard’s Diablo 4 has often been criticised for its live-service elements, but the most annoying part of the game is its seasonal content structure. While seasons add fantastic abiliies—such as one season bringing back the Witch Doctor class by adding its abilities as powers—they are short-lived. By the end of the season, they’re gone.
However, it seems that past Seasonal Powers could be making a return as permanent unlockable abilities, giving players more customisation options than any previous Diablo game. However, at the time of writing, this is still under consideration.
Speaking in the latest Diablo 4 Burning Questions episode, class designer Charles Dunn admitted that players are upset at the removal of certain seasonal powers. Every season, players invest into powers that they can no longer use, and the team is considering bringing some fan favourite powers back into the game.
“The most limited part are the seasonal powers,” Dunn explained. “Those really are only applicable for that season. And on one hand, we really like that, because it allows us to be very experimental. We can try a bit more wacky and crazy things.
“But we are definitely aware that a lot of players really resonate with some of these mechanics, some of these powers, in particular. So we’re gonna look to find ways to re-incorporate those old powers and old effects into future systems as well.”
Over the past year of development, hardcore Diablo 4 fans have complained endlessly about the temporary nature of Seasonal Powers as they fail to push the game forward in any meaningful way. At the end of the day, it feels like quick-and-easy—although game development is never easy—engagement to keep the game going, but it also feels like a waste of resources.
Diablo 4 does seem to be in the midst of a massive shake up ahead of the game’s next expansion release in 2026. Following leaks of the upcoming class in Blizzard’s internal files, it definitely seems that the iconic warrior is coming back to the series.
Additionally, Blizzard is working on some huge gameplay changes which have been confidentially shown to specific content creators. In a tweet following their session with the developer, YouTuber Lucky Ghost revealed “there are some MASSIVE changes/HUGE new features/ They’ve got some big ambitions with this one. I can’t share specifics yet but can say a lot of people are gonna be excited.”
Blizzard’s next expansion isn’t set to be released until some time in 2026, and it also appears that the expansion will be returning to Westmarch. It’s an exciting fan to be a fan of Diablo 4, especially if the studio heavily reworks its annoying seasonal release structure and focuses on simply improving the game every update.
