Bethesda’s Fallout 76 has come a long way since launch with the game’s upcoming Burning Springs expansion on the way with a heap of new content coming to the game.

Despite its rocky launch, Fallout 76 developers are extremely proud of how far the game has come, but it’s far from the end for the popular MMO-lite adventure. While update 64 is just around the corner, the team has years of additional content planned for the future.

Speaking to journalists in a roundtable interview, we asked creative director John Rush and production director Bill Lacoste how much content the team has planned for the future. While the developers didn’t hint at what any of the content will entail, there is “years” of new updates planned.

“Planning for the future, we’ve got stuff planned for years down the road,” Rush explained. “Everything that we’ve done in the past couple of years or so on 76 has been great in shaping up the game, in giving out early, mid-level players hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of hours of stuff to do, not even including the building and exploring, and we’ve been giving out elder players challenging experiences to tackle with raids and, of course, headhunts coming up. So, stuff for down the road, years down the road, is just going to get bigger and better for everyone.”

That doesn’t mean any major expansions will be dropping directly after Burning Springs as development on these huge projects takes a lot of time. Rush explained that work on this expansion started after “Season 1” of the Fallout TV show which released in early 2024. After that season, the team had the idea to bring in The Ghoul and incorporate him into a new expansion which took a year and a half to finish.

“Once Season 1 hit, right, and we had our updates coming out around that time, they were kind of more cosmetic… so seeing how awesome Season 1 was done and how much everyone loved it, including myself, we immediately started planning for Season 2,” Rush said. “We didn’t know the date that Season 2 was coming out, we just knew when Season 2 hits we wanted something that was tonally in line and big. So that’s where Burning Springs came from.”

Bethesda didn’t tease any of the future updates coming to Fallout 76 or how large those future updates will be. When Burning Springs does release it will be the game’s biggest update of all time, but there could be an even bigger update on the way sometime in the future.
