Fallout Season 2 is taking players directly to New Vegas, a region first explored in Obsidian Entertainment’s 2011 RPG Fallout New Vegas. While the show’s writers are trying not to make any ending of the game canon, it is continuing on 15 years after the events of the game.

With this in mind, Fallout Season 2 will show a massively changed version of the Mojave with recurring factions and iconic locations, something New Vegas lead writer John Gonzalez will be “watching with great interest”.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Gonzalez explained that they “really enjoyed the first season of the show”. While some fans of the series have not entirely clicked with the live-action TV series, the Fallout New Vegas writer enjoyed their time with its first season.

“I thought there was some really admirable complexity in the way that they explored the world,” they said. “I mean, I thought that the Maximus character is a fascinating creation, a fascinating slant to take you into the Brotherhood of Steel. I’m fascinated to see where it goes.”

“It doesn’t belong to you. That’s not the terms under which you do the work.”

“I’m going to be fascinated to see how New Vegas is interpreted in the second season,” the writer continued. “Obviously, I’ll be watching that with great interest.”

While it is interesting to see what the TV show will do with the New Vegas region, Gonzales does admit its weird to see charcaters, factions and locations they created pop in “other media”. Just like a comic book creator, there are no royalties given ton the Obsidian team for the re-use of their characters with Gonzales believing the two mediums are more tied than many realise.

“It is very odd to see characters that I created showing up in other media,” Gonzalez said. “It’s also something where there’s no credit for that, there’s no residuals for that. And that’s something that I understood doing the work early on. In some ways, I think doing narrative in video games is a little akin to doing comic book work.

“In the ’60s or ’70s, it’s like, ‘Oh, you created Spider-Man? Good for you.’ I mean, at least we know who Steve Ditko is, right? But it doesn’t belong to you. That’s not the terms under which you do the work. So it’s weird. To me, it just shows that when Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain first imagined this world, I think that they did something that was a master stroke.”

Amazon is planning to keep its Fallout TV show going for a long while, although its not known if future seasons will also take place in New Vegas and the surrounding Mojave at the time of writing. Season 3 of the TV series is expected to start filming in Summer 2026.
