Square Enix’s last entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series is currently in development, and it’s not known what changes will be made to the next title. While director Naomi Hamaguchi is adamant that the game won’t be cutting content from the original, everyone’s expecting some changes in the new game.
As development proceeds well, even with the new multiplatform focus, Hamaguchi has commented a lot on the future of the Final Fantasy 7 Remke. In an interview with GamesRadar, the director explained that his only desire is to make sure the trilogy’s protagonist, Cloud Strife, is happy.
In the interview, the director explained that he’s spent the last decade working on the new remake trilogy. Combined with his actual play time of the original Final Fantasy 7 and its related materials, Hamaguchi has spent more time with the character of Cloud Strife than most people.
“One thing I can say, after spending so long working on these games, over 10 years of developing on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series – I’ve spent so much time looking at Cloud, walking behind him, seeing him go around the world,” the director said. “I think I probably spent more time looking at the back of Cloud than I have anyone in my actual family.”
This answer came about after being asked about the infamous Cloud, Tifa and Aerith love triangle relationship, and what his take on the whole ordeal is. “That’s one I absolutely can not answer. I can not answer the question, and I will not answer the question,” he exclaimed, explaining that he only wants what Cloud Strife wants.
“So I got this very special feeling – I’ve got a lot of sympathy, a lot of affinity with Cloud himself, and I just want what makes him happy,” the Final Fantasy 7 Remake director said.
Cloud Strife has been a video game icon since his introduction in the original PlayStation RPG, but has he ever truly been happy? Honestly, probably not. I mean, we’ve all seen the ending to Advent Children, right?
After 28 years of fighting Sephiroth and battling in spin-off games, and now going through his own remake, maybe it is time for Cloud to be happy. (It would feel very Evangelion: Thrice Upon A Time).
