Final Fantasy 7 Remake lead Naoki Hamaguchi isn’t looking to change the original game’s story too much for the trilogy’s upcoming final entry.

Currently in-development at Square Enix, the final remake entry adapts the original game’s second half. Following on from the events of Rebirth, the next game is currently proceeding well in development.

While prior entries have made numerous tweaks, including the addition of the controversial Whispers, Hamaguchi explains that the team does not want to change too much about the original game’s story for their final outing.

“When it comes to the overarching story, I place my trust in what Kazushige Nojima writes and have no intention of altering that based on my judgment,” the game director explains in a Comicbook interview.

With that said, Hamaguchi explains the huge increase in visual fidelity introduces a dichotomy between some of the original game’s scenes. “With the significant increase in visual fidelity in these remakes, arranging events and the passage of time exactly as they were in the original game can sometimes result in scenes that feel implausible,” he says.

Hamaguchi explains that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3’s core story will remain as is. However, some scenes are reformatted to ensure “emotional engagement” with players. Hamaguchi says changes aren’t about “adding or changing the story”, but instead keeping good “emotional pacing” in parts one and two.

“That process required revisiting scenes again and again, and honestly, it was one of the aspects of development we were most sensitive about,” the developer says.

In the same interview, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake lead confirms that the final entry is “proceeding on time and on schedule”. No official release date is confirmed at the time of writing. However, Hamaguchi explains that work on the game’s reveal is “steadily underway”.

“What I can say is that development itself is proceeding on time and on schedule,” he says. “We believe it’ll become a title we can deliver with confidence as the culmination of the trilogy. We know many fans are eagerly waiting, and preparations toward the announcement are steadily underway. Please look forward to it just a little longer.”

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 may release sometime in 2027. A Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series port of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth releases on June 3, 2026.
