Bungie’s Marathon is almost upon us with the game’s global release time just hours away. Following a half-year delay and some major reworks, Bungie’s colourful extraction shooter is jumping into release later today with its first battle pass and some good news—that battle pass will never expire.
Following in the footsteps of games like Helldivers 2 and Halo Infinite, Bungie’s Marathon battle passes will push against FOMO and allow players to grab what they want whenever they want it. After over a decade of Destiny being the king of FOMO with entire storylines removed, Marathon is aiming to let players continue collecting rewards from previous seasons.
In a new round of information from Bungie, the developer confirmed that “rewards passes do not expire” after a season has ended. Additionally, players “can buy previous seasons’ Rewards Passes” at any point to unlock cosmetics that they desire.
Additionally, Marathon Reward Pass content can only be unlocked with the game’s Silk currency, which is earned by playing similar to Helldivers 2’s Super Credits system. However, unlike that game, Silk cannot be purchased in any way so every cosmetic you want to unlock has to be earned. Although, fans who buy the game’s Deluxe Edition will be treated with some extra Silk on launch.
Bungie has also announced that Reward Passes will never include “gameplay items”, only offering cosmetics. This is different to Helldivers 2 which locks stratagems behind its Warbonds, or even Arc Raiders which adds additional loot to its Raider Decks, including weapons, keys, and other items.
While Reward Passes will fight against FOMO as they are always available, Marathon will also include additional cosmetics that players can simply purchase with the game’s premium currency, LUX. Bungie has claimed that LUX will “only be used for cosmetics—not gameplay advantages”.
Marathon Season 1 launches later today with six Runner shells plus Rook, six factions, 28 weapons, three maps, and an unlockable Endgame zone in the form of Cryo Archive. The game’s first end-game zone will take players aboard the derelict UESC Marathon ship with a focus on “raid-like puzzle solving”.
Following this, Season 2 will bring an additional Runner shell, Sentinel, new weapons, modes, core, a new Cradle system to give players more autonomy over their Runner’s stats, and a nightime version of Dire Marsh. (If you played the beta, that’s where everyone gets murked,)
So far, even with an online hate campaign against it, Marathon appears to be launching in a great state. With future seasons currently in the works and the game currently topping sales charts before release, it looks like Bungie’s game will be a reasonably-sized hit.
