Games Workshop CEO confirms upcoming Warhammer 40K show script is being penned by horror icon Mike Flanagan

Amazon’s long in-development Warhammer 40K TV show is currently in the scriptwriting phase, confirms Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree.

The upcoming TV show, which has attached former Superman actor Henry Cavill, currently has no release date. At the time of writing, it’s not known what section of the universe the show will be adapting or if the series will be a completely new story altogether.

In a new statement from Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree, it’s confirmed that the upcoming TV show is still in the scriptwriting stage. Speaking during a recent financial report, spotted by IGN, Rountree also confirmed that horror icon Mike Flanagan is currently working on the show’s script.

In the report, Rountree confirmed that Flanagan has penned the outline of the show and now “should soon be moving on to script.” While the horror writer’s inclusion is new, the CEO also explained that Henry Cavill “remain involved as they have been for some time”.

With Flanagan’s involvement in the project, it seems obvious that the upcoming Warhammer 40K TV show will lean on the grimdark universe’s horror side. Since it’s reveal, many expected the TV show to be a largely action affair, but with Flanagan’s prior work, the series is likely going to lean hard on horror which will likely allow them to rein in the show’s budget, at least for its debut season.

The Amazon Prime TV show is expected to be a large multi-season affair when it finally does launch, similar to the platform’s ongoing Fallout TV show. When the project was initially announced, Henry Cavill confirmed that they had been working with the show’s writers and planners to help craft an overarching narrative for the series.

“Our combined efforts have led us to a fantastic place to start our Universe,” the actor and producer said, “which has been agreed upon by those up on high at both Amazon and Games Workshop. That starting place shall, for now, remain a secret. Watch this space, though — more to come in time!”

While we still don’t know what the show will entail, Amazon’s strong handling of the Fallout series does give some hope for the upcoming TV adaptation. However, it seems that we will still have to wait a long time until the series is actually out.
