Sony Santa Monica’s just-announced God of War: Laufey may not have a public release date, but the new spin-off “isn’t years away”.
Revealed in Sony’s latest State of Play conference alongside new footage of Marvel’s Wolverine, the upcoming game will continue the Norse trilogy through the lens of Kratos’ deceased wife, Laufey.
Expected to tie into the series’ predicted Egyptian trilogy, the upcoming game may release sometime in 2027. Following the game’s reveal, respected games journalist Jason Schreier explained that the game won’t take years to release, unlike other AAA announcements.
“FWIW [for what it’s worth], I wouldn’t read too much into God of War Laufey not getting a release date or window,” the journalist said on BlueSky. “In contrast to a lot of other big announcements, this one *isn’t* years away.”
God of War: Laufey is expected to be a PlayStation 5 title, despite somewhat disingenuous online chatter labelling it as a potential PS6 game. At the time of writing, the game has spent at least six years in development at Sony Santa Monica with work starting sometime in 2020.
Alanah Peace, who left Sony Santa Monica in 2024, confirmed that she spent four years working on the new God of War game. This means that work started on the game directly after the release of God of War: Ragnarok, which is to be expected.
“This is wild. For context everybody, this is the game that I wrote. This is the game that I wrote for Sony Santa Monica studios for four f**king years and I’ve not been allowed to address for six years. It has to be a complete secret, but this is the f**king game that I wrote,” the game actor, writer, and online personality said.
Alongside the new Laufey spin-off, Sony Santa Monica is also working on additional God of War games. While the series is still teasing a push towards the Egyptian mythology with new instalments, the studio is also working on a remake of the original Greek trilogy, seemingly for PlayStation 5.
A quick release isn’t entirely unprecedented for God of War, either. The last mainline game in the series, God of War: Ragnarok, was revealed in September 2021 with a November 2022 release date.
With that in mind, a 2027 release date for God of War: Laufey is realistic. However, for now, there is no concrete release for the new PlayStation exclusive. Although, it does seem like the game will be restricted to PS5 as Sony plans to no longer support PC for new single-player releases.
