GTA 6 is likely coming with its own version of GTA Online after its launch later this year, although no online component has been officially announced. While Rockstar Games will likely pivot hard to the shiny new online platform, what will happen to the current multiplayer game?
While full details have not been revealed, Take-Two CEO Stauss Zelnick hints that there will be additional support for GTA Online after the release of GTA 6. Right now, leaked documents reveal that the online multiplayer mode is still making over $1 million every day more than a decade after its launch.
As for the game’s current performance, Zelnick expects that to continue after GTA 6 releases. This is likely due to the game’s prominence on last-gen consoles and PC, both of which won’t have access to the new Grand Theft Auto later this year.
“I don’t know where GTA Online performance goes after the release of GTA 6,” the CEO said in an interview with The Game Business. “I have no reason to believe that the performance will not continue.”
As with any online platform, continued survival of GTA Online will likely require some form of content. For example, while Final Fantasy XIV is Square Enix’s prime MMO, the older still-popular Final Fantasy XI is still receiving minor support and new content.
In a prior statement earlier this year, thanks GR, Zelnick didn’t outright confirm that Grand Theft Auto V’s online component will still see new content. However, they heavily hinted that additional content will be a part of keeping the community alive and, obviously, the money rolling in.
“I have every reason to believe we’ll continue to support GTA Online,” the CEO said. “There’s a great community that loves it, that stays engaged, and again, in this quarter, Rockstar has shown that when you deliver great additional content, despite how long GTA Online has been at market, people show up.”
As for GTA 6 Online, there is next to no official information on the multiplayer mode. Earlier this year, it was hinted that the upcoming multiplayer mode will double down on user-generated content which players will be able to earn money from.
Speaking to PC Gamer, HipGopGamer teased that the game will turn players into “millionaires”. They said: “You’ve never ever seen a game like this, and this game will produce millionaires. We’re living in a time where, you know, UGC is a major thing. User Generated Content. It’s wise, and it’s worth the wait. Because when it does come, especially on PC, if you thought GTA 5 was crazy— especially with the RP servers and everything that they’re doing — you ain’t seen nothing yet.”
Nevertheless, it seems that the online component for GTA V will still have its place, which is nice to see. While the online mode has been supported for 13 years now, many players have turned Los Santos into their virtual homes, and it’s always nice to see older titles continue to maintain support.
